Respiratory Therapist Requirements

Entry Requirements in Prior Experience:

Career changers with some experience in such related medical occupations as emergency medical technician or nursing aide or orderly will have an advantage in seeking employment opportunities. But the most important requirements are completion of educational training and actual work experience in respiratory therapy.

Entry Requirements in Personal Qualities:

Respiratory therapists work directly with patients and therefore must have a clear understanding of their physical and psychological needs. In addition, respiratory therapists often work in emergency situations where the ability to remain calm and follow the detailed, step by step procedures of a given treatment is of utmost importance. Supervisory skills are also helpful, because respiratory therapists can advance to chief therapist within the hospital or other healthcare facility. Interest and ability in biological sciences are important for training courses and for understanding technical aspects of the work, while mechanical ability and manual dexterity are necessary for operating complicated equipment that respiratory therapists use in their work. The ability to pay attention to detail, to follow a doctor’s instructions, and to work as part of a team also play an important role in this field.
