Entry Requirements in Training and Education:
Formal training in emergency medical care is mandatory for emergency medical technicians. Though the programs may vary from state to state, the U.S. Department of Transportation has developed a standard, 100 hour program. The program is offered in all 50 states by police, fire, and health departments, and by hospitals, medical schools, colleges and universities. Special training programs for EMT- Paramedics, some of which are accredited by the American Medical Association’s Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation, generally last anywhere from three to five months. Admission requirements for these programs vary, but career changers generally are required to have a high school diploma and a valid driver’s license. States also require some form ofcertification after completion oftraining.
Emergency medical technicians who fulfill certain requirements of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians may obtain certification as Registered EMT-Ambulance. Additional training and other qualifications are required for certification as Registered EMT-Paramedic. The EMT-lntermediate is a certification for those who have completed part of the necessary requirements for EMT-Paramedic. Though these certifications may not be required for entry level positions, they may lead to better paying and more responsible positions.
