Occupational Therapist Assistant Requirements

Entry Requirements in Prior Experience:

Career changers with experience as a medical assistant, medical technician, or as a part time social worker may have an advantage when seeking entry level employment opportunities. Such experience is not required, however, and cannot substitute for the required professional education.

Entry Requirements in Personal Qualities:

Occupational therapists must be able to work with all kinds of people whose temperaments are likely to be as varied as their disabilities. To gain patients confidence, it is necessary to have a warm, friendly personality that inspires both trust and respect, along with ingenuity and imagination in adapting activities to individual needs. The therapist must be skilled, patient, and resourceful, since patients often present unusual and difficult learning problems.
