Aviation Safety Officer Salary (2021)

Aviation safety officer: Yearly Salary 2021, Job Market Outlook, Education, Competition, Work Style and Best Locations.

Was the last 747 or DC-10 you flew in really safe? Had the pilot been checked out lately? Is the aircraft being maintained properly, or could something have gone wrong way back at the factory? These are questions for the aviation safety inspector.

There are several categories of health and regulatory inspector's jobs in the U.S. government. All protect the public from health and safety hazards and enforce the laws and regulations designed to do so. Many inspectors jobs are not particularly high paying, however. Customs inspectors average just $40,000 a year and food inspectors come in even lower with an $38,500 average. But the aviation safety engineer, also known as the air safety inspector or officer, averages almost 100 percent more.

All air safety inspectors work for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Falling into one of two categories maintenance or operations officers their job is to be sure that FAA regulations governing the quality and safety of both aircraft equipment and personnel are being followed.
Choose this career and your duties might include inspecting aircraft manufacturing, maintenance, and repair or operations. You might certify aircraft, pilots, pilot examiners, flight instructors, and flight schools. And you might choose to specialize in either commercial or general aviation aircraft.
The next best paid health and regulatory inspectors are wage-hour compliance inspectors at $51,000 per year. Employed by the Department of Labor, they check out employers' payrolls and personnel records to be sure the company is complying with Federal laws in such areas as minimum wages, overtime, pay, employment of minors, and equal employment opportunity.

Next are the alcohol, tobacco, and firearms inspectors who average $48,000 per year in this Treasury Department career.

They go to distilleries, wineries, breweries, cigar and cigarette manufacturing plants, wholesale liquor dealers and importers, manufacturers and sellers of firearms, and explosives manufacturers. Their task is to be sure those places are in compliance with revenue laws, trade practices, and other regulations.
Other health and regulatory jobs include agricultural quarantine inspector, environmental health inspector, agricultural commodity grader, immigration inspector, mine inspector, and occupational safety and health inspector. About 225,000 people work as health and regulatory inspectors. Your chances are about even of working for the Federal, state, or local government.

Job Market Outlook:

Generally bleak, because of slow growth in government regulatory spending. Once obtained, however, this is a secure career generally unaffected by the economy.

Education:

FAA Air Frame and Power Plant certificate and aviation maintenance experience for maintenance officers. Pilot certificate and flight experience for operational officers.

Competition:

Getting hired can be difficult. Flight or mechanical training in the armed forces gives you something of an edge.

Varied, depending on specialty.
