So you want to be responsible for the safety of airline passengers and crew by keeping track of planes and instructing pilots from your seat in an airport control tower, one of the country's 25 enroute control centers or one of the flight service stations at airports? 


Great. Assuming you're articulate enough to give quick, clear instructions; decisive enough to make quick judgments in times of stress; and have a sharp enough memory to keep a lot of information straight at once, it's worth a try. If you're over 31, you're eligible only for jobs at flight service stations. Under 31, you can apply for any controller post. 

If you're selected after taking the civil service exams, you'll be sent to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Academy in Oklahoma City for 16 weeks of intensive training. You'll come out an expert on aviation regulations, the airway system, aircraft performance, and controller equipment. But you'll be going back to school periodically over the next few years as you work on the job to become a fully qualified controller. 

As one of the country's 37,000 air traffic controllers, you'll start out clearing planes for takeoff, then work your way up the career ladder as ground, local, and departure controller, and finally, arrival controller at the airport tower. 

If you're based at an enroute control center instead, the progression is from delivering teletyped flight plans to jobs doing manual handoff, radar handoff, and finally, radar controller. Your abilities will never be taken for granted. At least once a year, physical and job performance exams are scheduled. 

Because this is considered such a stressful job, the retirement program is one of the government's most liberal but there are advancement opportunities as well. From controller, you might move up to air traffic control management or even to an administrative job at the FAA.
