What do waiters do?

Career changers interested in becoming waiters or waitresses will probably find it easiest to start in a diner or small restaurant to gain some experience before applying to larger restaurants. Most employers prefer at least two or three years of high school. Larger restaurants and hotels usually require at least three months’ experience as well. In general, there is no special background or training needed for restaurant assistants.

Entry Requirements in Training and Education: 

Training for waiter/waitress and restaurant assistant usually takes place on the job. There are, however, some vocational schools that offer classroom instruction in the food service field. This type of instruction may also be offered by certain restaurant chains and restaurant associations. Occasionally employers make use of filmstrips and instructional booklets to prepare new: employees. In general, employers prefer at least two to three years of high school background. The educational requirements may be higher at larger restaurants and hotels. 

These employers usually require at least three months’ experience as well. There are usually no educational prerequisites for restaurant assistants. Restaurant assistants and waiters/waitresses must be in good physical condition. In some states the law requires that they obtain health certificates to prove that they don't have any contagious diseases.
