What do waiters do?

Waiters and waitresses work in restaurants and other facilities that serve food. They take orders from customers, serve meals, make out checks, and occasionally take payments. How to become a waiter?

Career changers interested in becoming waiters or waitresses will probably find it easiest to start in a diner or small restaurant to gain some experience before applying to larger restaurants. Most employers prefer at least two or three years of high school. Larger restaurants and hotels usually require at least three months’ experience as well. In general, there is no special background or training needed for restaurant assistants.

Employment opportunities are good for skilled applicants. Waiters/waitresses usually earn the minimum wage. However, they generally get tips and this income may greatly exceed their salaries. Incomes range from about $28.000 to $35.000 a year without tips .

Waiters and waitresses should also be good with numbers to help in preparing the check.

Entry Requirements in Training and Education: 

Training for waiter/waitress and restaurant assistant usually takes place on the job. There are, however, some vocational schools that offer classroom instruction in the food service field. This type of instruction may also be offered by certain restaurant chains and restaurant associations. Occasionally employers make use of filmstrips and instructional booklets to prepare new: employees. In general, employers prefer at least two to three years of high school background. The educational requirements may be higher at larger restaurants and hotels. 

These employers usually require at least three months’ experience as well. There are usually no educational prerequisites for restaurant assistants. Restaurant assistants and waiters/waitresses must be in good physical condition. In some states the law requires that they obtain health certificates to prove that they don't have any contagious diseases.
