How much money does a farmer make? Farmers: Key Features, The Work, Yearly Salary, Prospects

What do farmers do?

Modern American farmers are as much businessmen and agricultural science technicians as they are tillers of the soil. They have to be. While productivity of America’s farms and ranches has risen sharply in past years, profits, and the number of small and medium sized farms, have been declining rapidly. To run a successful, profit making farming or ranching operation these days takes huge amounts of capital for land, equipment, and operating costs. A working knowledge of technical information relating to such things as feeds and fertilizers, methods of controlling diseases, etc. is virtually required and can substantially increase the output of a farm or ranch. The traditional uncertainties of farming are the weather and market conditions at harvest time. These factors alone can make the difference between a profitable and a losing year.

How to become a farmer?

Despite these hardships, many people still make a living at farmingand ranching. But it is unquestionably getting harder to do and those with large family owned farms seem to have the best chances ofsuccess. Career changers who want to take up farming and have a chance of making a success of it, should therefore consider the decision carefully. Money, sometimes as much as half a million or morejust to get started, is a more important factor these days because it is no longer possible to start a profitable small farm. Incomes run from minimal to $ 300,000 and up annually. Experience is another factor. Those who have never worked on a farm will probably have to get formal training in the agricultural sciences at a two or four year college. Because of the technical nature of modern farming, even those who have been raised on a farm find it advantageous to have some formal training.

Farmer Requirements

Entry Requirements in Prior Experience:

Many farmers learn their trade by growing up on a farm and eventually taking over the business. Such practical experience in a farm operation is important for success in this highly competitive business. Career changers with experience as a farm laborer or farm supervisor may also have the background needed to take over operation of a farm.

Entry Requirements in Personal Qualities:

Farmers and ranchers must have, above all, dedication to their work. The hours are generally long, physically demanding, and there are many uncertainties involved. Farmers and ranchers must be able to make independent decisions and judgments about when to plant, what to plant, and when to harvest. They must also have technical knowledge about crops and livestock, ways to increase yields, market conditions, and financing and keep abreast of innovations and changing conditions in these areas. Finally, they must also have the supervisory skills to utilize hired help.

Entry Requirements in Training and Education:

Though there are no minimum requirements in formal training needed to enter this field, it is not usually possible to start up a successful farming operation without either considerable experience working on a farm or substantial college training in agriculture. For those who have not had the advantage of living or working on a farm, there are two and four year degree programs in agriculture which can provide the basic skills and background needed. Even those who have extensive work experience on a farm will probably find some formal training of great advantage, because of the highly technical nature of modern farming.
