City Manager Career

Career changers who have the necessary educational qualifications generally will begin in an entry  level position as a management assistant. Then, after several years of experience at this level, they should be able to move up to a position as city manager for a small city. The promotion ladder for citv managers then consists of taking positions in progressively larger cities as they become available. Competition for entry level opportunities is keen and even those career changers who have the preferred master's degree in public or business administration will probably have some difficulty in finding openings. Nevertheless, for those who do enter the field, the income advancement potential is high.

City Manager Requirements

Entry Requirements in Prior Experience:

Educational training is the most important qualification necessary for entry level opportunities in this field. However, career changers who have the required college degrees and some experience as a manager or administrator will probably have an advantage.

Entry Requirements in Personal Qualities:

Career changers should have an interest in working with details and be able to work well as part of a team. Supervisory managerial skills are an important part of the job, as are the ability to communicate well and the facility for resolving problems in a tactful way. Successful citv managers must also have sound judgment, self confidence, and the ability to perform well under stress. To handle emergencies, they must quickly isolate problems, identify causes, and provide alternative solutions. In addition, they must also be dedicated to public service. Their work often involves overtime for attending civic functions and reading and writing reports. In times of crisis, city managers are expected to be on top of the situation and this often requires still more overtime.

Entry Requirements in Training and Education:

Although some career changers with only a bachelor’s degree may find entry level opportunities, a graduate degree is most often required. A master’s degree in public or business administration is becoming almost essential, in part because of increased competition for entry level opportunities. But some career changers with graduate degrees in such related fields as engineering, social work, political science, or law may still find employment opportunities.
