What do secondary school teachers do?

Secondary school teachers instruct students in grades 7 through 12 in such areas as science, social studies, mathematics, English, and physical education. They attempt at the same time to adapt their teaching methods to the different needs in learning among students. Within a subject area, the individual high school teacher usually specializes and is state certified in the subject, but gives a variety of courses (for example, in English, adolescent literature, the novel, and composition; or, in science, general science, biology, or chemistry).

Secondary School Teacher Career

To supplement classroom instruction, the teacher typically becomes familiar with, and utilizes, audiovisual aids including films, slides, television, and other educational technology that may be available.

In some areas of study, a moderately good employment demand for teachers is projected for present and future years, especially in areas of mathematics, natural and physical sciences, vocational education, and special education (teaching handicapped young people, or the gifted). Other areas, including English, social studies, music, and art, will be hard to enter in the 2020s because of an oversupply of teachers and declining pupil enrollment. Tightening school budgets will further compound the problem.

The National Center for Education Statistics projects a decline in pupil enrollment through 2025. As a result, most teaching openings will become available through replacement of teachers who retire, die, or leave the profession.

Secondary School Teachers Requirements

Entry Requirements in Prior Experience:

For those men and women contemplating a change to secondary school teaching, a general background in instructing, training, or working closely with people is enormously beneficial, and can be transferred successfully to teaching. Prior experience in sales, public relations, personnel, office work, counseling, and social work are some fields that can be viewed as providing especially desirable qualifications in a new teacher. In addition, a strong command of specific subject matter learned as a major in college, perhaps history, business, or economics, will be a significant strength in the classroom.

Entry Requirements in Personal Qualities:

Teachers must be imbued with a love of learning and a desire to instill it in students. Characteristics of logical and orderly thinking, careful organization and planning, good communication skills, imagination and creativity enable the teacher to present his or her course work in a clear and interesting manner, and further encourage young people to develop these qualities in themselves by emulation. Working with students is intrinsically threefold: liking them, caring about their development, and motivating behavior towards growth in their intellectual capacity. A high degree of patience is a great advantage since students le irn and progress at their own pace. Emotional stability permits the teacher to handle a difficult situation or an emergency a disruptive student, or a bomb scare with confidence, calm, and authority, and reinforces respect in students for the quality of leadership. Teaching often can be physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausting, so that high energy, good physical and mental health, and a cheerf ul disposition are valuable qualifications in the profession.
