Education, Government, & Legal Careers
Career opportunities in education, government, and law should be good to excellent in the coming decade. Within education, population increases and demands for a better educated and retrained workforce should result in good job prospects for educators at all levels, but especially at the high school and adult education levels. Opportunities will also be excellent for kindergarten and elementary teachers, education administrators, and counselors.
While government at all levels will experience some cutbacks in personnel, the trend is to expand the public service in response to population growth. As the federal government continues to cutback by devolving programs to state and local government in the form of block grants, state and local governments will grow accordingly. Within government at the state and local level, opportunities will be especially good for individuals in criminal justice (police officers, corrections officers) and human and social services. At the federal level, we expect opportunities to expand in the areas of health services and criminal justice.
Legal Job Market
Opportunities also should be good for lawyers, judges, and paralegals in the decade ahead as American society continues to become more litigious. However, optimistic projections for major job growth in the legal field may be tempered by the continuing glut of law graduates and the high costs of legal services. While" opportunities may continue to grow, we expect they will not grow at the high rates projected by the Department of Labor.
