A teachingcertificate is usually awarded upon completion of four years of college study in teacher education, but a master’s degree may be required before a counseling certificate can be obtained.

Employment opportunities are somewhat limited over the long term as most openings will result from normal replacement needs. Entry Requirements in Prior Experience:

Guidance counselors might initiate group counseling sessions to combat a schoolwide problem of drug abuse, or they might be asked to find the reason why a bright student is having trouble dealing with his classmates. They should be able to coordinate the activities of others and work as part of a team.
