Why do People go on Fad Diets

People generally go on fad diets because they want to lose weight quickly, which fad diets initially seem to help them achieve. Never mind the fact that any weight lost will soon be regained; fad diets are just there to stimulate weight loss, not to get people to change the way they think about food or enable them to maintain a lower weight.

Fad diets come and go, drifting in and out of fashion, depending on which celebrities are being paid huge enough sums of money to advocate them. Ordinary people see the 'before' and 'after' pictures of someone, famous or not, who has lost a large amount of weight and want to believe that they, too, could achieve such impressive results. They are also attracted to the idea of fast weight loss. Everybody wants to know that their deprivation and effort is paying off, and so it is nice to actually see a difference and for others to pass comment as well. It can sometimes help them to stay motivated to continue losing weight.

However, fad diets are usually very restrictive having been designed to maximise the amount of weight loss. Even though most of this weight will come from muscle mass and water, people are still pleased to jump on the scales and see that the number has gone down. They don't consider the fact that they can't eat cabbage soup forever and that once they start eating normally they will regain the weight they lost as their body has to readjust to being fed.

The worst part is that instead of acknowledging that fad diets are basically a waste of time for anyone trying to lose weight for good in order to improve their appearance and their health, most people simply decide to try out a different fad diet. It is not unusual for people to find their weight yo-yoing and never really stabilising where they would like.

Fad diets can help people achieve short-term weight loss, though, which is perhaps why there is a surge in their popularity in the months leading up to summer and the post-Christmas period, when people decide it is a good time to start losing weight. Every bookshop seems to have an area dedicated to the various fad diets and workout plans that can help individuals to lose weight quickly without the negatives usually associated with losing weight - namely hunger, deprivation, and cravings.

In the long term, though, fad diets won't help people achieve their weight-loss aims, especially for those with a lot of weight to lose, but this won't stop people hoping for a miracle diet that can help them shift their excess weight quickly without the usual inconvenience of dieting.
