On the other hand, no other job pays so highly for so few hours of actual duty. The average pilot works only 16 days per month, flying an average of 74 or fewer hours in that time. He sees the world for free with his hotel bills paid and an allowance for meals while he's away in Paris, Rio, or Singapore. No wonder there's stiff competition for his job. But once a pilot is hired, his promotions (and corresponding pay increases) are granted by a strict system of seniority, very much like military arrangements.

You might become a flight instructor at a local airport, work for an air taxi company, or become a crop duster. One of the fastest-growing and most interesting specialties is business pilot, flying the smaller planes owned by corporations. Salaries tend to be lower than at the airlines, but jobs are easier to come by.
