Air Traffic Controller Requirements in Canada

Entry Requirements in Prior Experience:

Previous general work experience (up to three years) is required for those who have not completed a four year college degree program. Career changers who have some college and less than three years work experience may also be eligible. In addition to this general experience, work experience as a military flight controller or civilian airplane dispatcher may also be helpful. Such experience may make it easier to pass the applicant’s examination and complete subsequent training, though it is not required.

Entry Requirements in Personal Qualities:

Career changers interested in becoming an air traffic controller should be able to work independently and have a decisive personality. The ability to make rapid decisions affecting the safety of hundreds of airline passengers is an important part of the job. A quick and retentive memory is also needed because controllers constantly receive information about the planes under their direction. Air controllers must immediately grasp, interpret, and remember this information for a short period of time. They must also be able to communicate clearly, in order to pass the information. Interest and ability in working with the abstract technical scientific are important, both in the actual work of air traffic controllers and in completing the many training courses required for new air controllers. Good verbal abilities may also be helpful in studying complex technical manuals and procedural bulletins. Career changers must be less than 31 years old, pass a physical examination (on an annual basis for working controllers), and have vision that is correctable to 20/ 20.

Entry Requirements in Training and Education:

The basic requirement for this position is completion of four years of college, or three years of general work experience, or some combination of the two. New air traffic controllers are selected from eligible applicants through the competitive Federal Civil Service System and must be able to pass a test that measures their ability to learn and perform the controller’s duties. An extensive training program that includes both classroom instruction and a long period of on the job training is then provided by the Federal Aviation Administration. Failure to become proficient in any position during the training program may result in dismissal and a substantial minority of controller trainees are washed out of the program.
