EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK: 

Jobs will grow faster than average from 128,000 in 2020 to 144,000 in 2025 due to the overall rapid growth of the health care industry and the increased incidence of strokeinduced hearing and speech loss in an aging population. 


NATURE OF WORK: 

Speech language pathologists assess and treat persons with speech, language, voice, and fluency disorder. They work with people that are unable to form speech sounds, or make them clearly; those with rhythm and fluency problems, like stuttering; people with speech quality problems, like inappropriate pitch or harsh voice; and people with problems understanding and producing language. Audiologists assess and treat those with hearing and related disorders. They use audiometers and other testing devices to live the loudness at which an individual begins to listen to sounds, their ability to differentiate between sounds, and other tests of the character and extent of their deafness.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Speech language pathologists and audiologists add clean comfortable surroundings. Nearly 50 percent provide services in preschools, elementary and secondary schools, or colleges and universities. Others add hospitals and offices of physicians and with home health care agencies. Some even have their own private practices. Audiologists tend to be used in independent healthcare offices while speech-language pathologists more often add school settings. performing from desks or tables, their jobs aren't physically demanding. 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, QUALIFICATIONS: 

Most speechlanguage pathologists and audiologists have master's degrees. All 39 States that need speech-language pathologists to be licensed also require a academic degree or equivalent; 275 to 300 hours of supervised clinical experience; a passing score on a national examination; and 9 months of post graduate professional experience. About 230 colleges and universities offer relevant master's degrees.

EARNINGS: 

The median annual earnings of full time salaried speech language pathologists and audiologists were $79,500 in 2020. The median annual salary for certified speech language pathologists with 1-3 years experience in 2020 was $83,400. Certified audiologists averaged $65,300. Speech-language pathologists with 22+ years experience earned a median annual salary of $93,000. Experienced audiologists earned $106,000 a year.
