Radiation therapy technologists assist physician specialists (such as radiologists) by administering prescribed radiation treatments to cancer patients. How to become radiation technician?

Career changers interested in this field usually must have a high school diploma and must complete an approved two year professional training program. A one year program is available for certain qualified individuals, including radiographers and registered nurses with certain types of specialized training. Professional certification as an RT(R) (ARRT) is available to graduates of approved training programs who meet certain other qualifications. 

How much do radiation technicians make in California?

Employment opportunities for technologists who have completed the required training are very good and the current nationwide shortage of technologists will probably continue for some time. Income advancement potential, however, is limited. Starting salaries range from $45,000 to $50,000 annually. Experienced technologists average more than $75,000 a year in California.

Radiation therapy technologists should be able to work well with patients and have a strong interest in helping others. An ability to understand and deal with technical scientific information is important for completing professional training and for administering the prescribed treatment to patients. Technologists must be able to work as part ofa team, follow a doctor’s prescribed treatment, be alert to changes in a patient’s condition, and be able to administer the necessary first aid to a patient in the event of an unexpected emergency.

Entry Requirements in Training and Education: 

For career changers without previous training in a related area, a two year professional training is required to obtain an entry level job in this field. A high school diploma is required to enter the program. Technologists who have completed accredited training programs may apply for certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists as a Registered Technologist RT(T) (ARRT).
