How much money does a social worker make? Social Workers: Key Features, The Work, California Salary, Prospects

What do social workers do?

Social workers are community troubleshooters. Through direct counseling or referral to other services they help individuals, families, and groups handle problems. The nature of the problem and the time and resources available determine which of three traditional approaches (casework, group work, and community organization) social workers will use.

How to be a social worker?

Career changers usually must have a bachelor's degree in order to qualify for an entry level position in this field. A bachelor’s degree in social work may be advantageous but is not necessarily required. That is because many public agencies require applicants to take competitive examinations. In these cases it is the test score and not an applicant's college record that determines who will be considered for an opening. In addition, social workers in many states are required to register or apply for licenses.

Employment opportunities for social workers vary considerably according to geographic location. Competition may be keen for openings in large cities in the Northeast, for instance. Opportunities in the Sunbelt states and in some rural areas may be better, however. For those who do find work, income advancement potential is fairly high. Starting salaries begin at about $60.000 a year for those with a bachelor's degree. Experienced social workers may earn $82,000 a year and up in California.

Social Worker Requirements

Entry Requirements in Prior Experience:

Some part time or volunteer work in this field may be important in securing a full time entry level position. Career changers with this experience will have had the opportunity to test their own suitability for social work and may have an edge when competing for available openings. However, they must still have the necessary educational qualifications and may also be required to compete successfully on a civil service examination.

Entry Requirements in Personal Qualities:

Social workers must have a basic concern for people and their problems. Along with this desire to help others, they must also have the maturity, objectivity, patience and sensitivity to provide assistance in what are often highly emotional situations. Social workers must be able to maintain good working relationships with their clients and their co-workers as well. The nature of their work, however, also requires that they be able, to make appropriate decisions independently. In addition they must be able to handle responsibility. Their work often may directly affect the well being of individuals and families.

Entry Requirements in Training and Education:

Career changers who want to enter social work usually must have at least a bachelor’s degree. While a degree in social work may open up the possibility of starting in positions of greater responsibility, many workers in this field gain entry level jobs with a degree in liberal arts or humanities, sociology, or psychology. This is because hiring for positions in public agencies is usually subject to state or local civil service requirements. Applicants may have to take a written examination and their test scores (not their academic credentials) determine whether or not they are selected for consideration. Some entry level jobs may require a master’s degree in social work.

About 26 states have licensing or registration laws regarding social work practice and the use of professional titles. Usually work experience, an examination, or both are required for licensing or registration. Periodic renewal may be required. In addition, social workers with the necessary qualifications may be certified by the National Association of Social Workers.
