Many technologists and technicians earn considerably more than the average. Assistants generally earn somewhat less than technicians.

Entry Requirements in Prior Experience:

An interest and ability in the sciences are perhaps the most important requirements for entering this field. For technologists especially, an aptitude for the sciences is necessary for completion of the required training and for the work itself. Verbal ability is also important for understanding the complex technical literature in this field. Medical laboratory specialists generally must be able to work accurately and dependably, even under pressure situations. Manual dexterity and normal color vision are other highly desirable characteristics.

Entry Requirements in Training and Education: 

Medical technologists must have at least a bachelor’s degree and formal professional training in medical technology. Medical technicians must have a high school diploma and complete a formal professional training program. Assistants must have a high school degree and are usually trained on the job. Hospitals and schools offer the one year specialized training program for technologists and this training may sometimes be combined with undergraduate college work. Technicians may get their training through two year programs at community colleges and universities or through the armed forces. One year programs are available for assistants. 

More than ten states require technologists and technicians to be licensed. Professional certification in a number of specialized areas is available to technologists and technicians who meet the requirements ofvarious certifying agencies. Advanced degrees in medical technology are necessary for those who specialize, teach, do research, or go into administrative work.
