Job opportunities for biological and medical scientists will grow at a faster rate than most jobs in the decade ahead. They should increase from 220,000 jobs in 2020 to 350,000 jobs in 2030. Biological scientists study living organisms and their relationship to the environment. Most concentrate on some area of biology like ornithology (study of birds) or microbiology (study of microscopic organisms). the sector includes aquatic biologists, marine biologists, biochemists, botanists, microbiologists, physiologists, zoologists, ecologists, and agricultural scientists. WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Most biological scientists work a traditional 40-hour week in offices, laboratories, and classrooms. Some work with dangerous organisms or toxic substances. Botanists, ecologists, and zoologists often participate in field trips which can involve strenuous physical activity and primitive living conditions.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, QUALIFICATIONS: 

The Ph D degree is required for many college teaching and independent research positions. A academic degree is required for a few jobs in applied research, management, inspection, sales, and repair . A baccalaureate is adequate for a few nonresearch jobs, like testing, inspection, and technical sales.

EARNINGS: 

Median annual earnings for biological and life scientists in 2020 were $92,400. The bottom 10 percent earned less than $71,000 a year; the top 10 percent earned more than $114,000 a year. Beginning salaries in private industry averaged $73,000 a year for graduates with bachelor's degrees in biological science. Those employed with the Federal government in nonsupervisory, supervisory and managerial positions averaged $105,000 a year.
