Medical Administrators are responsible for the management of the various facilities that provide medical and health care. The job may also include planning for the expansion of facilities and services, as well as carrying out any necessary fund raising drives. While many Medical Administrators carry out these tasks alone, most supervise a staff of assistant administrators. Medical Administrators generally report to a board of directors or other governing body.

Medical Administrators are usually required to have a master’s degree in health administration, hospital administration, or public health, though degrees in business, personnel administration, or public administration are often acceptable. The shortest entry route for career changers is to start in smaller organizations with less specialized academic requirements. They may then transfer to larger organizations.

The field of health services administration has been expanding rapidly in recent years, and the trend is expected to continue. However, competition forjobs has intensified. The bestjob opportunities are expected to be for candidates with graduate degrees. Job opportunities in long term health care facilities, such as nursing homes, are expected to be best for candidates with backgrounds in business or management. Medical Administrators can earn anywhere from $50,000 to $75,000 per year and up.

Entry Requirements in Prior Experience:

Communication skills are also helpful to administrators who become involved in fund raising, lecturing, and other public relations activities for their organizations. They have to be dedicated and able to put in long hours to insure the smooth running of their operations.

Entry Requirements in Training and Education: 

In most cases Medical Administrators are required to have a master’s degree. While graduate level training is not always required, competition for entry jobs is so strong that candidates with less education have very few opportunities. Licensure is not usually a requirement except in nursing homes and other longterm health care facilities. Administrators in these areas are required to be licensed in all states and the District of Columbia. In most cases applicants prepare for the qualifying licensing examination by taking a special course of study usually lasting from 100 to 200 hours. Approximately half the states require applicants to complete an internship known as the Administrator in Training, lasting approximately one year, before they can take the licensure examination.
