Firefighters perform a valuable public service, often risking their own lives to save property and the lives of others. Thus, career changers should also have a strong interest in helping others. Firefighters eat, sleep, and work together as a crew under conditions ofstress and danger. Therefore each firefighter must be dependable and able to get along well with others in a group. For those firefighters who advance in rank to officers, leadership qualities are important to maintain the discipline and efficiency of the firefighting company. In addition to being at least 18 years of age, career changers interested in becoming firefighters must meet height and weight requirements and be able to pass tests of physical strength, stamina, and agility.

Entry Requirements in Training and Education: 

Most of the instruction on firefighting techniques and other practical training is provided by fire departments in regular training programs for new firefighters. However, career changers must have at least a high school diploma and must score well enough on a competitive entrance examination to receive an appointment as a firefighter. Experienced firefighters generally must complete advanced study programs and pass examinations given by the fire department in order to win promotions.
