What does a cosmetologist do?

Cosmetologists also referred to as beauticians, beauty operators, and hairstylists work in beauty parlors helping customers care for their hair. For the most part cosmetologists cut and style customers’ hair (or wigs and hairpieces). In some cases they are responsible for shampooing hair as well. Cosmetologists also perform other functions to help create and maintain a customer’s hairstyle, including straightening or permanent waving, and lightening or darkening hair color. Among the other services that cosmetologists offer are scalp and facial treatments, makeup analysis, and manicures.

Career changers interested in this field must meet the training requirements ofthe state in w hich they w ill be practicing. All states require that cosmetologists be licensed. Most states require graduation from a state licensed cosmetology school. This may mean either a public or private vocational school, offering day or evening classes. Daytime programs can usually be completed in six months to one year’s time. Evening courses generally take longer. In a few states, completion of an apprentice training program may substitute for graduation from a cosmetology school. In addition to graduating from an accredited school, the career changer must pass a physical examination to be eligible to apply for the state licensing examination.

Job opportunities are good for licensed cosmetologists, on either a part time or full time basis. Income advancement usually depends on individual arrangements. Most cosmetologists earn a commission on the money they take in (approximately 50 percent), plus tips. Beginning cosmetologists paid straight salaries earn between $24,000-$36,000. Experienced specialists make approximately $55,000-$90,000 and up.

What You Need to Enter Entry Requirements in Prior Experience: 

Licensing is the most important requirement for entering this field. Some background experience in working with people trying to improve their appearance health club workers or makeup artists and demonstrators  could give career changers a competitive edge.

Cosmetologists or beauticians are artists of appearance. They should be creative and imaginative and able to translate their visions into appealing hairstyles. To work with the tools of the trade scissors, combs, rollers and hairpins, etc. cosmetologists must have good manual dexterity. The job also often involves standing for prolonged periods of time.

Many cosmetologists go on to manage their own beauty parlors and should, therefore, have basic business skills. An owner must also have the supervisory skills necessary to maintain an efficient staff of workers. Some cosmetologists may also double as teachers in programs for trainees or as demonstrators for related products in department stores. These cosmetologists must have patience, good communications skills, and an even temperament.

The qualifications necessary to obtain a cosmetologist’s license vary from state to state. Most states require graduation from a state approved public or private cosmetology school. A few states have no educational requirements. In most states the licensing examination includes a written and practical test. There may also be an oral examination combined with the practical test in some states.
