For them, there are programs leading to a master’s degree in urban or regional planning that require only one year. It may also be possible to find entry level openings with only a bachelor’s degree in city planning, architecture, engineering or landscape architecture, though this may be difficult.

Employment opportunities will probably be hard to find even for those with the preferred educational qualifications. The number of qualified applicants usually exceeds the available openings and this trend is expected to continue throughout the decade. However, those who do find work have a fairly high income advancement potential. Starting salaries range from $47,000 a year for those without graduate degrees to $62,000 or more for those who do have them. Salaries for planning directors can go as high as more than $82,000 annually.
