Why Women try to Live up to Unrealistic Pressures to be Thin?

Weight appears to be a bit of an obsession for some women, as they spend most of their lives on a diet, continually trying, and often failing, to watch what they eat and lose a bit of weight so that they can finally fit into a smaller dress size. In the past women may have aimed to reach a UK size 10 (US size 6), but at the very time that more people are being classed as obese so has the ideal female figure become smaller. Nowadays, size 10 isn't regarded as small enough so that more and more women are pressuring themselves to get down to a skeletal size 4 (US size 0).

Being able to fit into size 4 clothing might not be that shocking for teenagers and women who are shorter and who have a naturally petite frame, but seeing six foot models walking down the runway and actually being able to fit into the sample sizes, which are usually extremely small, can come as rather a shock. Although representatives of the modelling industry are keen to assert that models tend to be naturally tall and thin, this obviously isn't always the case, and indeed there have been a number of high-profile deaths of models from anorexia.

Unfortunately, many women end up buying into the idea that in order to be attractive they have to be as skinny as possible, even if they are not built to be ultra-skinny. Women seem to be under the impression that it is desirable for women to be as skinny as possible, and the images they see in the media must influence this perception to some extent. All the most attractive, successful women that feature on the cover of magazines and star in television shows and films are usually extremely svelte.

This is hard enough for women who are continually struggling to control their weight to accept, but when these female celebrities state that they are blessed with good genes and are able to eat what they want without going to the gym, it can be frustrating to say the least. There are some celebrities who own up to the fact that they have to be careful what they eat and make sure they go the gym, which most women can relate to. That doesn't mean women wouldn't prefer to be skinny without having to put a lot of effort in.

Many women are fighting a losing battle with their weight, though, and instead of losing weight to be healthy they lose weight to be thin. If they ever do succeed in losing the weight they usually put some, if not all, of it back on in the end, anyway, because they were trying to lose weight for the wrong reasons, and most probably did not attempt to do it in a sensible way. Women ought to realise that not everybody is meant to be thin, and that it is much more important to focus on being fit and healthy.
