Emotional eating is a problem for many people. When you’re feeling down about life, stressed out, anxious, bored or lonely food can be of some comfort to you. Eating perks you up for a little while, until you realise just how much you’ve eaten and you’re left feeling guilty and worried about weight gain. The trouble is that once you get into a habit of eating to make yourself feel better it can be difficult to get out of and if you consume more calories than your body can burn the inevitable result is weight gain.
When you’re feeling unhappy with your life it is sometimes because you don’t feel that you have any control of things that are going on around you. You may be unhappy because you don’t like your job or don’t get along with your colleagues; you might be bored with your life and can’t imagine the future being any different; you might be lonely or in a relationship that makes you feel miserable. Food isn’t a solution to any of these problems, but eating it takes your mind off any problems you’re facing, albeit temporarily.
Of course, it’s never fruits and vegetables that you crave when you’re looking for some way to distract yourself from the problems you face in your life; it’s always the most calorific types of food. It might be chocolate and sweets that you crave and which you end up bingeing on or it might be fast food and savoury snacks that you stuff your face with. All of these types of food give you a quick energy boost, which makes you feel good, but soon you’re left feeling miserable and lethargic.
Plus, it isn’t particularly good for you to eat lots of junk food, since you generally end up consuming more sugar, salt and fat than is healthy. It becomes harder to control your weight, as you find yourself increasingly reliant on junk food to make you feel better, rather than addressing what is causing you to experience negative emotions. You only feel worse in the end when you next step on the scales and discover that you’ve put on a few pounds. You may be inclined to turn to food again, even though you know taking this course of action is hardly likely to improve the situation..
