What is the ice cream diet?
When a calorie controlled diet which includes low fat, high fiber foods, fruit and vegetables, is combined with exercise, it would be hard not to lose weight. Add a daily portion of ice cream to the mix as a treat and gloss it up as a new way to lose weight, and you have yet another fad diet from Holly McCord calling for you to buy her book. The ice cream diet is just basically a re-hash of her peanut butter diet, except ice cream sells the benefits of calcium whilst peanut butter is protein rich and replete with monounsaturated fatty acids.
Dieters who buy the book expecting the ice cream diet to be a diet where one indulges their favourite food all day long are likely to be disappointed. The diet is strictly calorie controlled at 1500 for women, and 2000 for men, and allows one cup of ice cream per day for women with an additional half cup for men. In order to stay within the calorie count low fat ice cream is recommended but isn’t a prerequisite. No doubt the next diet book from the former nutrition editor of Prevention Magazine will be the dark chocolate diet, with a couple of chocolate squares thrown in as a daily treat.
It is a well known fact that calcium is necessary to aid in the prevention of osteoporosis. In addition new research is indicating that calcium may have the same kind of binding of fat effect that fiber has, and helps to eliminate fat cells from the body. Research indicates that whilst calcium supplements are an adequate replacement for calcium when it comes to strengthening bones it seems that supplements don’t have the same effect on eliminating fat. Thus drinking skimmed milk or including yogurt in the diet may help with weight loss, and this diet just plays on that by adding ice cream as another source of calcium which is certainly a more pleasant alternative to skimmed milk.
The book though also claims that the diet will help to reduce the risk of colon cancer, lower high blood pressure, and help to prevent kidney stones. The diet book is complete with fifty helpful recipes. The book and the diet are not new but have caught recent attention and come into the spotlight again.
The Ice Cream diet is nothing more than another calorie restricted diet which basically promotes healthy eating and regular exercise, and sells itself by the gimmicky title promising more than it delivers. It should lead to weight loss but not because it includes ice cream but because it is so calorie restricted.
