The Benefits of Losing Weight Gradually

Even though you’d probably like to reach your weight-loss goal as quickly as possible when you’re carrying a few extra pounds, sometimes it might actually be better to aim for gradual weight loss. The trouble is that you if you try to lose weight as rapidly as you can you usually have to go on a very low calorie diet that will enable you to shift your excess weight, but won’t prepare you for what to do after you’ve reached your goal. You won’t be in the right frame of mind to manage your weight and you won’t have embraced the necessary habits either.

Consequently, you could find yourself piling on the pounds just as quickly as you lost them, which means you’ve basically wasted your time. What is the point of losing a lot of weight just to gain it all back again? Indeed, after going on a crash diet you sometimes put even more weight on as you make up for lost time by eating all the foods that you haven’t allowed yourself. Your body has to readjust to being fed after you’ve virtually starved yourself for weeks on end and so your body is going to hold on to those extra calories in case it has to contend with starvation again in future.

This isn’t really a problem when you lose weight gradually, though, as you are able to take sensible steps to achieve your weight-loss goals, rather than reducing your calorie intake to a ridiculously low level that you won’t be able to keep to for long. If you lose weight at a gradual rate you can still consume a reasonable number of calories without depriving yourself. This is obviously a positive thing, as it means that you get used to eating a sensible diet, rather than alternating between eating virtually nothing and bingeing on junk food.

It is obviously better to approach weight loss in a way that will enable you to keep the weight off, rather than aiming to lose weight quickly but then struggling to keep it off. You obviously need to have patience when you’re only losing one or two pounds a week, but you can console yourself with the fact that you don’t have to deprive yourself of anything, as long as you remember to keep in mind calorie content and portion sizes. It might take you longer to reach your goal, but at least it won’t be quite as hard to keep the weight off when you’ve adopted healthier eating and exercise habits.
