How a Treadmill may not help you Lose Weight?

Owning a treadmill won't automatically help you to lose weight, particularly if it never gets used. It is not unusual for people to decide in the New Year or when summer is just around the corner that they want to lose a bit of weight and get fitter, and so immediately go out and buy a piece of exercise equipment in the belief that if they own a treadmill or exercise bike they are more likely to use it. Of course, it rarely works out that way, since many people aren't prepared to set aside the time to exercise regularly. They might enthusiastically use their treadmill for a couple of weeks to convince themselves that they haven't wasted their money, but in most cases the treadmill will soon end up gathering dust.

Exercise is obviously crucial for enabling people to achieve their weight-loss goals, but it is only one side of the coin, as diet is also key. Losing weight requires you to get the balance right between the number of calories that go into your body and the number that go out, so that it is tipped in favour of calorie expenditure. If you burn 3,500 more calories than you consume you will lose a pound of fat, and thus running on a treadmill can contribute to the number of calories you expend.

Using a treadmill on its own is not enough, though, and so it is important to assess what kinds of food you eat and the quantities and then try to make healthier food choices and eat less but also eat regularly. Running is a great calorie burner, which is why people often regard purchasing a treadmill as offering them the best way of losing weight, without necessarily considering the impact of their calorie intake on their ability to lose weight.

Indeed, it is one thing to buy a treadmill and another to use it. You can't just run on a treadmill for half an hour, twice a week and expect to see huge improvements in your fitness levels and for the pounds to just be falling off you. It is recommended that adults get at least half an hour of moderate exercise, five days a week, and thus this is the very minimum you should be aiming to do. Once you get into the habit of running on your treadmill you will find it easier to lose weight, as you burn calories during your run, as well as afterwards, and build muscle where before there was only fat.

A treadmill can offer you an effective way of losing weight or maintaining your ideal weight, but it needs to be used regularly to have any effect, whilst the right diet and frame of mind also have to be considered essential components of a successful weight-loss programme.
