How to get Motivated to Lose Weight after the Holidays

Even the most dedicated diet and fitness fanatic may find their resolve weakening during the long, drawn out period of holiday festivities. After all, some of your favorite foods and most extravagant desserts and treats only make their appearance during this time of year. Only a saint can resist temptation all the time. When it's all over, that snug fit you're experiencing in your jeans or the even more obvious accusation you see when the number on the scale pops up and shouts out the undeniable evidence of your transgressions will make you hang your head in shame. Add to that the simple fact that, once the hoopla of the New Year's celebrations wear off, you are stuck in the middle of that long, uninspiring stretch of winter where motivation may be in short supply.

When it's time to take yourself to task and set your sights on returning to your goal weight, or perhaps struggling to get there for the first time, it's in your best interest to develop a support system. The beginning of the new year is a great time to consider joining one of the popular and successful weight loss organizations such as Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig. They often offer special rates to join for new members in the first few months of the new year. Here, under the watchful eye of a trained diet professional, you can learn the basics of keeping a food journal, learn to manage your food intake by being aware and accountable and maybe even learn a few new recipes that are both tasty and healthy. In the company of like minded individuals seeking to achieve the same goals you have, you may forge some new friendships and devise new coping strategies as you work towards your weight loss goals.

If other members of your family find themselves in the same predicament after the holidays you can support each other in your efforts. If your spouse is supportive of your goals and efforts, the journey to weight loss stands a greater chance of success for both of you. Sometimes all it takes is one determined person to get the ball rolling and set the pace for a thinner, happier spring for everyone.

Don't downplay the role of exercise in your weight loss program. Renew your gym membership or sign up for a class in yoga, strength training, Pilates or some other physical activity that appeals to you. While you're having fun you won't even notice that some of those extra pounds are slipping away.

However you set about working towards your weight loss goals, it's important to avoid making your concern about your weight the central theme of your life. If you pursue the goals, dreams and interests of your life on every level you will have less time to focus on some of those bad eating habits that got you into this predicament in the first place. By living a well rounded, full life you will find yourself becoming the best person you are able to be.
