How teenagers can take control of their own weight?

Many teens who feel they are overweight dread the idea of dieting. Who can blame them? To most people the word "diet" means sacrificing your favorite foods for yucky ones, exercising all day, or starving yourself. All of the above are untrue and should never be used for weight control, especially by children and teenagers.

Dieting as a child or a teen can cause serious problems to the individual in adulthood. Starving yourself, for one, will deprive you of all those important nutrients which could lead to things like bone loss because the body had been deprived before full maturity is reached. Between the ages of 12 and 17, when maturity is reaching its final stages, you need to be certain that you have a sufficient intake of calcium, vitamin D and vitamin C. Folic acid and iron help to prevent anemia which can lead to tiredness and impaired brain activity. (Things that you should not try to cure with an energy drink, by the way.) Those symptoms are the last thing you need when attending middle school or high school.

Starving yourself certainly isn't a way to lose weight and neither is depriving yourself of your favorite foods. While increasing the number of fruits and veggies in your diet, you can still have those rich foods like pizza or brownies, but in moderation. If you forbid yourself to eat something that you love, it will only be a matter of time before you have a relapse and gorge yourself on ten pounds of fudge. A good way to satisfy your sweet tooth enough to fight temptation is a cup of fruit. By doing so, you also get your nutrients and it's a win-win situation.

One of the major sources of calories, especially in teens, is drinks. Instead of water, most prefer to have a can of soda. Energy drinks are also growing in popularity when they are just as bad, if not sometimes worse, than sodas. The average soda as roughly 100 calories whereas an energy drink can have up to 140. That is much too much. Reducing yourself by a single can a day can make all the difference. If all you usually drink is soda, try alternating your drinks. For every other can that you normally drink, drink a bottle of water. (Water isn't so bad, you should give it try.)

Another simple tactic is to avoid eating when you are bored or upset. Most overweight people of all ages suffer from those habits. If you are or feel that you are overweight, talk to your parents and/or a dietician. They can help you achieve your ideal weight. Everyone's ideal weight is different. 110 pounds may be healthy for one person, but a death sentence for another. Be sure that your weight goal is realistic for you.

While food is always the key factor in weight control, forming good habits and good outlooks are also just as important. To want to lose weight is a good thing, but to expect losing it in a matter of days is unrealistic and can be dangerous. It takes time to reach a healthy weight, but it will last a lifetime.
