How often can you eat ice cream and be healthy?

If you have a sweet tooth then ice cream may be one of those treats you find extraordinarily hard to resist. The combination of fat, sugar, a cool sensation and exciting flavours is pretty rewarding. Of course as with most treats, eating lots of ice cream is not very healthy, or a good idea if you need to lose weight. Fortunately there are healthier ways to enjoy ice cream than working your way through a half gallon tub in front of the telly.

Try alternatives

First of all it is worth experimenting with alternatives. You can get low fat ice creams, fat free versions, vegan ice creams and frozen yoghurts. These have fewer calories than standard ice cream and it may well be you like them just as much. Remember that they are usually still pretty high in sugar and come under the heading of ‘treats’ not ‘very healthy snacks’ so don’t get carried away. Just because something is labelled ‘diet’ does not mean you should be eating twice as much of it.

Keep portions small

Which leads onto portion control. Whether you are eating full fat ice cream or a diet variety keep to a sensible amount. A couple of scoops is a treat, a whole tub is a binge. Too much will just make you feel slightly sick and do nothing for your health.

Don’t lay in stocks

If you find it hard to resist temptation then don’t stock up in the first place. A freezer full of ice cream is asking for trouble next time your willpower falters. Instead of filling your freezer with bulk buys of cheap stuff buy small containers of high quality ice cream when you decide to treat yourself. It is also better to walk to the nearest convenience store for a single ice cream bar than to raid the freezer.

Eat with fruit

You can bulk out your ice cream and make it far healthier by enjoying it with fresh fruit. Try a little served over sliced bananas for a delicious yet reasonably healthy treat that will fill you up. Or prepare a fruit salad to eat besides, under or on your ice cream.

Eat it as a treat, not as a habit

You’ll enjoy your treats far more if you don’t indulge very often. Ice cream after every meal becomes a routine and you’ll probably hardly notice you are eating it. Ice cream once a fortnight is something to really savour. It is also worth bearing in mind that junk food can be quite addictive. If you are eating very high sugar, high fat foods every day the chances are your body will become dependent. Give yourself a few weeks of no junk at all in order to adapt to a healthier diet, then stick to indulging yourself occasionally.

A sensible diet includes occasional indulgences. If you ensure that your day to day diet is healthy and balanced it is fine to have the odd treat, whether it is a bar of chocolate, a glass of wine, or a portion of ice cream. Just don’t let that odd treat turn into a daily ritual.
