How losing weight can become complicated?

We tend to complicate weight loss, because we have a false belief in what it takes to lose weight. We think that being “super strict,” or following painful guidelines is how it‘s done. Weight loss doesn’t need to be complicated or painful, but we make it that way because we think it’s the only way we’ll succeed. Here are some of the ways we complicate losing weight, and ways to simplify it.

- Too much confusion.

There always seems to be a new “hot diet” hitting the market. We build up hope that we’ve finally found our answer to our weight loss battle. The problem with those new diets flooding the market, is that they rarely work, and they create a lot of confusion instead. We try all of their new ideas, but then we’re left not knowing what we should be doing after we‘ve failed. Do we eat low-carb? Do we try low-fat? Should I become a vegetarian? We end up with all of these questions, and we’re back to square one, when we last searched for a new plan. Now, we’re searching again for the next great promise, or at least that’s our hope. Most of our overweight population, has no idea how to lose weight, because there’s so much conflicting advice available. Most weight loss plans, don’t include all of the ingredients that it takes for success. One thing they should include, is simplicity. Before starting a new weight loss plan, make sure it can be sustainable over your lifetime, you can eat your favorite foods, there’s no purchasing foods or pills, it’s not a fad, and it’s also geared towards forming a healthy lifestyle.

- We’re always counting calories and measuring.

I’m not saying this is necessarily a bad thing, but it could drive a person crazy. Perhaps in the beginning, you’ll need to get used to portion control, but who wants to spend their lives counting calories and measuring their foods? To me, that’s not how I want people to live their lives. Losing weight takes a bit of work, but I’m not for doing complications. I teach my clients how to make a plate of food, based on portions they can “form out” with their eye. I show them a “cut out” of what I call, “a portion plate.“ This plate is smaller than a dinner plate. I want them to remember this size no matter where they’re eating. This teaches them what size their food “circle,” should be in. They separate this circle into three different food categories. They have one protein choice, one vegetable choice, and one starch choice. I’ve found this to be very affective in making them feel they have some freedom, while still being able to lose weight. This way, there are no complications, no worries about needing to pre-fix your meals, no awkward moments at parties, and you can eat what they love.

- We can’t stick to the weight loss plan.

If we’re on a plan that isn’t working, it must have its complications. I think any weight loss plan we can’t succeed with, was not designed for our individual needs. When I look back, I actually laugh now, as to some of the crazy diets I tried. Now that I’m beyond that, and working with clients as a trainer, I want to make sure they feel some normalcy will return to their lives. I remember years ago, crying, asking, “why can’t I be normal?” I tried so many ways to lose weight, and with each failure, I was destroying myself. Everything about my weight loss efforts were complicated. Everything I ate I kept an eye on, and I needed to exercise everyday, and both became an obsession. This is why I say, “it’s no way for us to live.” We need to wonder, what’s it going to take to “get it right” for us? I can assure you, that if you need to lose weight, there are answers out there. We just don’t find the right ones so easily, and it takes a few tries to be able to. It also takes lessons to realize what hasn’t worked. We do eventually understand that those complicated and crazy ideas don’t work, and we adopt a sensible plan of action.

- We lack control.

When we keep losing and gaining weight, eventually we need to believe we’re doing something wrong. For most people battling their weight issues, they can’t seem to gain control over them. A lot of factors go into weight loss success, so it tends to lead us into feeling an overwhelming amount of stress. We pressure ourselves with trying to lose it to quickly, but we never obtain the intended result. We need to believe that there is a more simple way. The only way for you to have lifelong success, it by following an easy plan, that works. Weight loss should involve changes, and then more changes along the way. Change, should be part of building a healthier lifestyle, not in any way intended to make us feel miserable. You shouldn’t starve, it shouldn’t cost you anything, and you shouldn’t feel as though you can’t do it over the long-term from the start. We have a responsibility to our well being, and part of that responsibility, is that we do things sensibly, and not drastically. We can’t let anything push us into unhealthy measures, especially those ads that are hyped by the advertisers. Complications begin when we let too many claims, too much information, and pressures force us into adopting unhealthy measures. Weight loss success will come with patience, and an understanding of what’s realistically going to lead you to achieving your goal.
