How life can undermine your commitment to lose weight?

Many things going on in our lives can interfere with our weight loss. A lot of times, we just blame ourselves for not losing weight, when there are many things contributing to our struggles. If we’re aware of how life continues to contribute to our weight issues, we’ll create a better, more positive environment for dealing with them and losing weight. Here are some of the ways that life itself can undermine your commitment to losing weight, and what you can do to change it and finally achieve weight loss success.

- We put others before our own needs.

We all have life responsibilities, but we often forget about ourselves while tending to them. We may have families, children to raise and careers, but what about the time for us? Sure, those things are extremely important, but we can’t neglect our own happiness. In the mix of life, we need to take sometime out for ourselves, or else we won’t be tending to our own personal needs. Weight loss success involves that we’re aware of our needs, and that we fulfill those needs. While you’re done doing all of your daily responsibilities, how many times are you left feeling empty at night? How many times has it caused you to overeat or binge eat? How many times have you felt lonely or sad, because you’ve neglected yourself. Many of us love being a caretaker for our responsibilities, but this doesn’t mean it’s fulfilling us. It may make us happy, but in the end, we’re still left with emptiness, because we never gave something to ourselves. Take the time each day to make sure you do something for you, because if you don’t, you’ll still be getting the same results. You deserve to have an hour of free “you time” to exercise, journal write, or go for a massage. Don’t let your responsibilities control you to the extreme, that you don’t have time to commit to the things that make weight loss achievable.

- We get pulled in many directions.

Our emotions have a great deal to do with whether or not we succeed at losing weight. Life presents many challenges at times, and if we don’t know how to handle them, we may lose control of what’s important to us. For a great deal of people struggling to lose weight, they don’t know how to deal with most challenges that come their way. For most, it’s easy to rely on food as a way of dealing with an emotion. If a client brings up an issue bothering them, we quickly, constructively deal with it, so that it doesn’t become an ongoing problem. We’re all going to have things going on in our lives, but that doesn’t mean that we ignore our responsibilities to ourselves, and let them undermine our weight loss efforts.

- Too many temptations.

The world out there is full of temptations. If you’re going to luncheons, parties, the movie theater, or fast-food restaurants, you know quite well what I’m talking about. Those tasty foods that we love so much, are part of the distraction of our commitment to losing weight. It’s not going to go away, because everywhere we turn, there they are. We sort of “roll with life” most of the time, when it comes to eating. If we’re out with others, we want to enjoy ourselves, much more than we want to “be good for the day.” It doesn’t have to seem so difficult though, to remain in weight loss mode, as we make it. Moderation does play a huge role in our weight loss success. I don’t preach “can’t have” to my clients, and this is a big part of their success. I know that I don’t want to be told I can’t have something, or go out with friends to dinner, only to salivate over what they’re eating ,and I can’t have. How many people can survive on a diet that deprives and/or starves them? Not many! So, what we need to do, is adopt a plan that brings real world eating into our lives. Life is always going to have its share of temptations, but we can remain in control and enjoy them, while not going overboard.

- We don’t strike a balance.

For us to find success in anything in life, we need to have a balance within “our living.” Think of this as you’re total environment. In other words, many things in life are going to be pulling at us, and trying to interfere with our success, but it won’t happen if we disallow it. When it comes to losing weight, many things going on around us can undermine our efforts. But, if we outsmart them, we remain in control, instead of giving in. Our lives deserve our attention. Weight loss is a hard enough battle, especially when most people think it’s only about a diet. Most of our troubles include many factors that we’re allowing to hold us back from having success. Learn to not let others distract you, influence you, or make you sad enough to make unwise decisions. Figure out what things will work for you, to change the things that have been stopping you from having successful weight loss. Once you’re aware of your total environment, and how you can ward off outside influences, life won’t be able to undermine your weight loss commitment efforts anymore.
