All architects are not starving. The noble calling that attracted Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Philip Johnson, and Mies van der Rohe creates few millionaires, but the average architect's earnings are quite respectable, and a number of experienced architects with top-notch reputations earn well over $70,000 a year.

Like a doctor, however, an entrepreneurial architect has the expense of setting up a practice and that can create financial problems. "My real complaint is not that we don't make enough to live on," says a California director of design. "It's that, for the education we have and the talent and the amount of expertise that goes into designing a building, we should be making twice as much."

The architect's job begins at the beginning, and the creative work at the drawing board is only one of its many aspects. When a couple decide they want to build a house, or a business executive is ready to plan an office complex, they approach an architect to discuss their requirements and estimated costs. Given the assignment, the architect prepares scaled drawings, develops a final design, including the floor plan, structural details, working drawings, and materials specifications. He or she helps the client choose a contractor, negotiates the construction contract, and visits the building site as work progresses. The architect's job is done only when the building is completed and paid for.

If you want to avoid corporate bureaucracy, this could be your ideal career. Most of America's 129,500 architects work for small architectural firms, usually with ten or fewer employees. You might also work for a builder; a real estate firm; a government agency, such as Housing and Urban Development; or any kind of business that has a large construction program. Many architects aspire to open businesses of their own or to become partners in the firms that employ them.

Chances are you'll begin as a drafter. Later on, you may choose to specialize in one phase of the architectural process, perhaps design or the administering of construction contracts.

What is the job outlook for an architect?

Good. Nonresidential construction is expected to grow rapidly during the decade ahead, creating faster than average occupational growth.
