You may use electron microscopes and centrifuges, and you may even have to design your own lab apparatus for certain experiments. Patience, perseverance, and true scientific curiosity are musts for satisfaction in this career. 

So is an advanced degree, and most biochemists spend four or five years working toward the Ph.D., knowing they'll never be considered for career advancement or really significant research without it. Many young scientists follow that with two years or more of research with an established investigator, working as a research associate or postdoctoral fellow. 

Of the nation's 36,000 biochemists, about half work for colleges and universities and one-fourth for private industry, often for drug, cosmetic, or insecticide companies. You might also work for a nonprofit research organization, a foundation, or a government agency.
