EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK: 

Employment of recreational therapists should increase rapidly within the decade ahead as demand increases for physical and psychiatric rehabilitative services and services for the disabled. Recreational therapists held 80,000 jobs in 2020. The number of jobs should increase to 120,000 by 2025. 


NATURE OF WORK: 

Recreational therapists provide a spread of treatment services to individuals with illnesses or disabilities. These include the utilization of arts and crafts, animals, sports, games, dance and movement, drama, music, and community outings to assist reduce depression, stress, and anxiety and to create confidence and independence.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Recreational therapists add a spread of settings hospitals, rehabilitation centers, park and recreation departments, education programs of faculty districts, and programs for older adults and other people with disabilities. Their work usually takes place in special activity rooms and should involve visit parks, playgrounds, swimming pools, restaurants, and theaters.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, QUALIFICATIONS: 

The basic entry level requirement for recreational therapists may be a baccalaureate in therapeutic recreation. Paraprofessional positions require an associate in recreational therapy or a health care related field. Most employers want to rent individuals who are certified therapeutic recreation specialists (CTRS). Such individuals must have a baccalaureate , pass a written certification examination, and complete an internship of a minimum of 350 hours under the supervision of a licensed therapeutic recreation specialist.

EARNINGS: 

The average annual salary for therapeutic recreation speciahsts in 2020 was $62,300. The average annual salary for consultants, supervisors, administrators, and educators was approximately $73,000. Recreational therapists with the Federal government earned $64,000 a year.
