EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK: 

Employment is expected to grow much faster than average from 919,000 in 2010 to 1,220,000 in 2025, a 28 percent increase, due to long term healthcare needs of an aging population and the overall growth in health care needs and services. 


NATURE OF WORK: 

Licensed practical nurses (L.P.N. 's) look after the sick, injured, convalescing, and handicapped under the direction of physicians and registered nurses. Most provide basic bedside care take temperature, vital sign , pulse, and respiration; treat bedsores; prepare and provides injections and enemas; apply dressings; give alcohol rubs and massages; apply ice packs and predicament bottles; insert catheters; feed patients and help them with bathing, dressing, and private hygiene. Some States allow L.P.N. 's to administer prescribed medicines, start intravenous fluids, and help deliver, care for, and feed infants. Thirty-two percent add hospitals, 27 percent add nursing homes, and 13 percent add doctors' offices and clinics. 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Most L.P.N' s work a 35-40-hour week, but some work nights, weekends, and holidays. They spend an excellent deal of your time on their feet, helping move patients and equipment. Many L.P.N' s are exposed to caustic chemicals, radiation, and infectious diseases like AIDS and hepatitis. L.P.N. 's in nursing homes and personal homes often have heavy workloads and long hours.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, QUALIFICATIONS: 

Most L.P.N.'s complete a one-year State-approved practical nursing program. they need to pass a State licensing examination. Approximately 1,200 Stateapproved programs are operated by trade, technical and vocational schools; community and junior colleges; and high schools, hospitals, and colleges and universities.

EARNINGS: 

In 2020 the median annual earnings of full-time, salaried L.P.N. 's were $49,876. The middle 50 percent earned between $45,148 and $53,948. L.P.N' s working in chain nursing homes averaged an annual salary of $43,900. Those working in hospitals and medical centers earned a median annual salary of $47,360.
