What do statisticians do?

Statisticians devise, carry out, and interpret the numerical results of surveys and experiments. In doing so, they apply their knowledge of statistical methods to a particular subject area, such as natural science, economics, human behavior, or engineering. They may use statistical techniques to predict population growth or economic conditions, develop quality control tests for manufactured products, or help business managers and government officials make decisions and evaluate the results of new programs. 

How to become a statistician?

Career changers usually must have a bachelor’s degree in statistics or mathematics to enter this field, and advanced degrees are helpful for winning promotions. A knowledge of or educational background in another field, such as economics, may also be required for some entry level jobs.

Employment prospects in coming years will be best for statisticians who have the required training in statistics and a knowledge of a field of application. Only a few are likely to find openings in college teaching. Income advancement potential of statisticians is high. Salaries range from a minimum starting salary of about $ 55,000 a year to peak salaries of about $70,000 and up.

Statisticians must have strong abilities in math, as well as a facility for devising statistical surveys and interpreting their results. Much ofa statisticians work involves translating concrete data into the abstract world of mathematics. Computers are an important tool in this work and statisticians usually must know computer programming. 

Ultimately, however, the accuracy of a survey or other project depends on the statistician. They must not only decide on the best overall approach to making a survey, but regularly must be able to handle large amounts of detailed information when carrying it through to the final results.

Most beginning jobs in statistics require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in statistics or mathematics.
