What do air conditioning technician do?

Air-conditioning, refrigeration, and heating mechanics work with climate control systems in homes, offices, and factories. They install, maintain, and/or repair these systems. Some mechanics are expert in all areas. Others choose to specialize in one area. For example, air-conditioning and refrigeration mechanics service only air conditioners and refrigeration equipment.

They follow blueprints and other written specifications to install such components as compressors, motors, evaporators, and condensing units. On occasion, air-conditioning and refrigeration mechanics also service heating systems. Furnace installers or heating equipment installers install oil, gas, electric, solid-fuel, and multi-fuel heating systems.

Oil burner mechanics provide maintenance for oil-fueled and heating systems. Gas burner mechanics or gas appliance servicers provide the same service for gas- fueled heating systems. All air-conditioning, refrigeration, and heating mechanics use a variety of tools and testing devices in the course of their work.

How to become a air conditioning technician?

Employers usually prefer applicants with a high school diploma and some background courses in mathematics, mechanical drawing, electricity, physics, and blueprint reading. In most cases applicants are also required to have some additional training in air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration.

Many private vocational schools, community colleges and high schools offer programs that combine study and practice. Unions and air-conditioning and heating contractors run apprenticeship programs that include 144 hours of classroom instruction and last up to four years.

Applicants for apprenticeship programs must have a high school diploma and pass a mechanical aptitude test. The shortest route for career changers is to start as helpers to learn the trade over the course of several years by working alongside experienced mechanics.
