What does a construction electrician do?

Construction electricians install new electrical power and signal systems and electrical machinery, usually in new and renovated buildings. Generally they follow blueprints and specifications and are responsible for bringing the new systems into safe operating order. Maintenance electricians are generally responsible for maintaining and repairing such systems and equipment and most of ten are employed by manufacturing companies.

How to become a construction electrician?

The shortest entry route for career changers is through an apprenticeship program, which usually lasts about four years. Once they have completed the program, electrician trainees usually must pass a licensing examination given by the city, county or state.

Employment opportunities are good for maintenance electricians, while the outlook for construction electricians is less promising. In the latter field, opportunities depend over the short term on the level of construction activity. In both fields, income advancement potential is limited. For construction electricians, actual income depends on the amount of work available. They earn an average of over $30.25 per hour. Maintenance electricians tend to work steadily and earn an average of $28.50 and up per hour.

Construction Electrician Requirements

Entry Requirements in Prior Experience:

Most electricians learn their trade directly through apprenticeship programs or on the job training as an electrician’s helper. However, career changers with some prior experience in working with electrical devices, such as electrical appliance repairers or assemblers, and air conditioning installers, will have some advantage when seeking an entry level opportunity.

Entry Requirements in Personal Qualities:

Career changers interested in this field need not have great physical strength but they must be able to work on their feet for long periods and often will work in cramped quarters. They should be agile, have good manual dexterity, and a facility for working with tools. Good color vision is also important because electricians usually identify wires by color. Career changers who have never had any experience in the construction trades should be aware that this kind of work calls for something of a “rough and ready” disposition.

Both construction and maintenance electricians frequently work under hazardous conditions and risk electrical shocks, falls from ladders and scaffolds, and blows from falling objects. Though above average mental abilities are not required for work as an electrician, this field does require an interest in abstract technical scientific work because electricians frequently work with complicated wiring diagrams and electronic apparatus.

Construction electrician job description

Entry Requirements in Training and Education:

Some construction and maintenance electricians still begin as electricians helpers, but most get their start in the trade through a formal (four year) apprenticeship program. Such programs offer the shortest route for advancement to electricians. Career changers who want to apply for such a program usually must be a high school graduate (with one year of algebra) and at least 18 years ofage. High school courses such as electricity, electronics, mechanical drawing, science and shop provide a good background for this field. Once a career changer has completed the apprenticeship program, it may also be necessary to apply for a license in a city, county, or state before becoming eligible for employment as an electrician. This is especially true in large cities.
