What do surgical assistants do?

Surgical assistants work under the supervision of a surgeon and perform tasks related to surgery and patient care. They may take part in pre-operative procedures, including laboratory work, to help establish the correct diagnosis, assist the surgeon during surgery, and take part in post operative care of the patient.

Career changers interested in this field must complete an approved two year education program for surgical assistants. A minimum oftwo years of under graduate education is required to enter the program.

Employment prospects are very good for those who complete their professional education in this field. With the rapid expansion of the medical field in recent years, surgeons delegate more responsibility to assistants. At present there are not enough qualified surgeon’s assistants to meet the demand for their services. In addition to these good employment prospects, assistants have high income advancement potential. They earn substantial starting salaries, usually ranging between $75,000 and $85,000 a year in California, and salaries of experienced assistants may be $140,000 or more a year.

Surgical Assistant Requirements 

Entry Requirements in Prior Experience: 

Prior experience cannot substitute for the required professional education. Career changers who have some experience in the medical field, however, such as work as a medical technician or nursing assistant, will probably have an advantage when seeking entry level jobs. This experience is not required, however, and clinical training is included in the professional education program. 

Entry Requirements in Personal Qualities: 

A surgical assistant must be able to work well with patients, remain calm during emergency situations, and exercise good judgment even in times of stress. Interest and ability in the biological sciences, particularly physiology and anatomy, is important for completing the required professional education and for successful performance on the job. Verbal skills are necessary for learning the complex medical terminology and for understanding the technical literature associated with this field.

Entry Requirements in Training and Education: 

Surgical assistant must complete a two year program designed to provide the necessary professional training for this field. There are currently only three approved programs for surgeon’s assistants in the country, two of them offered by medical colleges and one by a community college. Two years of undergraduate study are required to enter the program. Surgical assistants may also gain valuable professional recognition by obtaining certification as a Physician’s Assistant Certified (PAC). Requirements for this certification are set by the National Commission of Certification of Physician’s Assistants.
