College Career Planning and Placement Counselor Salary and Career 2021

Career planning and placement counselors bridge the gap between education and work. Their primary responsibilities are to assist students and alumni in determining suitable careers and then to help them get a job. Placement counselors assist in resume writing and in arranging job interviews with prospective employers. They are also responsible for staying abreast oflabor market conditions and for advising the school administrators on desirable courses for the curriculum. 

Career changers who already have a bachelor’s degree will find that the shortest route to enter this profession would be by earning a master’s degree in the counseling field. T hose who have a broad background in business, industry, government, or education might also find it possible to enter this field. 

2021 Salaries

Employment opportunities are limited in this competitive field because of an abundance of qualified job seekers, the cutbacks in spending, and an anticipated decline in college enrollment. Advancement in the field usually depends on further education and advanced degrees. Income advancement is limited and depends on the type of institution. The median annual salary of placement counselors is about $28,000 a year. Starting salaries run some $25,000 to $28,000 a year, and peak salaries may reach $45,000 a year and more. 

What You Need to Enter 


Entry Requirements in Prior Experience: 

Previous experience which may prove helpful for entering this field includes employment counseling, personnel work, and social work. Experience will not, however, substitute for the advanced education usually required for this competitive profession. 

Entry Requirements in Personal Qualities: 

Career changers interested in making this type of counseling their second career must have the ability to communicate effectively with both students and prospective employers. Tact, patience, and concern for others are also important personal traits. It is also necessary to be open minded and willing to do considerable research in order to properly match a student with the rightjob. Workers in this field are subject to periods of stress, which they must have the energy and good humor to withstand. In most situations today, an ability to handle a computer could be helpful. Strong verbal skills are essential. The ability to work independently is important, especially for those counselors who have sole responsibility for career planning in their school. 

Entry Requirements in Training and Education: 

There is no specific educational program required for people seeking to enter the profession ofcollege career planning and placement. However, most colleges and universities look for applicants who have a master’s degree in counseling, college student personnel work, or a behavioral science. Career changers who already have a bachelor’s degree may want to consider returning to college for an advanced degree.
